Description

Ms. Vivian Shipp’s collection consists of two photographs: a 1965 image of her parents and a 1963 photo of her brother. Mr. J. Daniel Massie, Ms. Shipp’s father, was the first African-American city magistrate in Hopkinsville and a prominent real estate broker. Her mother, Lottie R. Massie, was the first African-American teacher at Indian Hill Elementary School. Daniel F. Massie, Ms. Shipp’s brother, graduated from Attucks High School, attended Kentucky State University, and eventually, Fisk University in Nashville. At Fisk, Mr. Massie joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was shot in the back in Nashville and was paralyzed. Mr. Massie went on to earn a law degree from the University of Louisville and worked on civil rights issues in Louisville as well.
